3 Days in Seoul: All Five Grand Palaces, at a Couple's Pace

October · five palaces, two gates, three museums · a moderate pace

  • 3 days
  • October
  • 12 stops
  • A couple's trip

All five Joseon grand palaces fit into three days here, and the route around them carries a couple through Seoul's older layers: the restored stream, two of the great city gates, and museums kept for the evening. October puts the palace grounds in autumn colour and keeps the walking mild. The pace is moderate - a palace to start the day, the city's edges after lunch, and a museum or a lit gate when the light goes.

A sample trip planned by Triptic.

Map of the stops in Seoul
Day 1

West palaces, folk life, and the Blue House

Gyeonghuigung

Gyeonghuigung

Gyeonghui Palace (in Korean: Gyeonghuigung, literally Palace of Serene Harmony) was a palace located in Seoul, South Korea. It was one of the "Five Grand Palaces" built by the Joseon Dynasty.

The quietest of the Five Grand Palaces and the first stop for a reason - it draws a fraction of the crowd that queues at Gyeongbokgung next door.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
Gyeongbokgung

Gyeongbokgung

Palace in Seoul, South Korea.

The largest of the palaces. Wearing a hanbok gives free entry, and rental shops line the streets nearby. The main gate also stages a ceremonial guard change.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
National Folk Museum of Korea

National Folk Museum of Korea

National museum in Seoul, South Korea.

Tucked inside the Gyeongbokgung grounds; a useful indoor change of pace before the walk uphill to the Blue House.

Afternoon · 2 hr
Blue House

Blue House

Former official residence of the president of South Korea.

Entry is by guided tour and timed, so carry a passport or ID. The views across the old palace roofs toward the mountains are the payoff.

Evening · 1 hr 30 min

Gyeonghuigung and Gyeongbokgung sit one street apart, and the folk museum stands inside Gyeongbokgung's grounds, so the morning flows without a transfer.

Day 2

A stream, a south gate, and a museum after dark

Deoksugung

Deoksugung

Palace.

An unusual mix of Joseon halls and a neoclassical stone building. The stone-wall path around the outside is a classic Seoul stroll.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
Cheonggyecheon

Cheonggyecheon

Stream in Seoul, South Korea.

The restored stream runs through downtown. Start at Cheonggye Plaza and turn back when the mood takes you - the first stretch holds the interest.

Morning · 1 hr 15 min
Namdaemun

Namdaemun

Main gate of Seoul fortress; one of The Four Great Gates (cardinal) as one of The Eight Gates of Seoul as part of the Fortress Wall of Seoul, South Korea.

The great south gate now sits on a traffic island; the pedestrian routes around it give the best view of the old walls.

Afternoon · 1 hr 30 min
National Museum of Korea

National Museum of Korea

Museum located in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The evening slot is deliberate - the galleries are quieter late in the day, and two hours covers the permanent floors at a fair pace.

Evening · 2 hr

The first three stops hang together around City Hall: Deoksugung, then the stream beginning a few minutes away, then the south gate. Keep the pace easy.

Day 3

Modern art, the Secret Garden, and the east gate

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, South Korea

National museum.

The Seoul branch sits a short walk from Gyeongbokgung and pairs Korean modernism with changing international shows. A slow lap of the building rewards.

Morning · 2 hr
Changdeokgung

Changdeokgung

Palace in Seoul, South Korea.

The Secret Garden is the draw and it is guided only - sort that tour at the ticket office before you wander the front courtyards.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
Changgyeonggung

Changgyeonggung

Palace.

The quieter next-door palace; its greenhouse and broad pond give it a gentler mood than the grander neighbours.

Afternoon · 1 hr 30 min
Heunginjimun

Heunginjimun

One of The Four Great Gates (cardinal) as one of The Eight Gates of Seoul as part of the Fortress Wall of Seoul, South Korea.

The east gate, lit after dark and facing Dongdaemun's newer buildings across the road - the contrast is the point.

Evening · 1 hr 30 min

Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung share a wall. Secure the Secret Garden tour at Changdeokgung's ticket office before exploring the courtyards.

Good to know

Which Seoul palace is least crowded?

Gyeonghuigung, the smallest of the Five Grand Palaces. It gets a fraction of the visitors who queue at Gyeongbokgung one street away, which is why this route starts there.

Do you need ID to visit the Blue House?

Yes. Entry is by timed guided tour and the tour checks a passport or state ID, so keep one in your pocket for day one.

Is the Secret Garden at Changdeokgung worth it?

It is the reason to visit. It runs on guided tours only, so join one at the ticket office when you arrive, then explore the courtyards while you wait.

Are Seoul museums open in the evening?

Some are, and this trip leans on it: the National Museum of Korea is the evening stop on day two, when the halls are quieter than at midday.
