Prague, 4 Days · A Friends' Walking Route

May · 4 days · castle hill, old town, Jewish quarter, New Town

  • 4 days
  • May
  • 16 stops
  • A trip with friends

This is a walking trip across the city's four faces: the heights of Strahov and the castle, the river and its bridges, the quiet quarters of the old town, and the wider New Town. Every morning starts early and every evening ends on high ground, so the long May light turns each close of day into a view. The pace is packed, which is why the route lets the districts, not the map, set the order.

Map of the stops in Prague
Day 1

The castle hill, from monastery to river

Strahov Monastery

Strahov Monastery

Church complex in Prague.

The monastery and Prague Castle share the same hill, so plan them as one long morning and walk down into Malá Strana afterwards.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
Prague Castle

Prague Castle

Castle complex in Prague, Czech Republic, dating from the 9th century.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Church

Church in Prague in Malá Strana neighborhood.

Afternoon · 45 min
Lennon Wall

Lennon Wall

A wall in Prague, Czech Republic.

Bring a pen if you want to leave your own message; the wall fills a narrow lane that is easy to walk straight past.

Evening · 45 min

Arrive at Strahov Monastery at the start of the morning and let the day walk downhill from there: the castle, then the short drop into Malá Strana. Bring water for the climb.

Day 2

Crossing the city along the river

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge

Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic.

Morning · 45 min
Clementinum

Clementinum

Building complex in Prague, currently used as library.

The baroque library hall is the heart of the stop; most of the 45 minutes belong to that one long room, so take it slowly.

Morning · 45 min
Prague Astronomical Clock

Prague Astronomical Clock

Astronomical Clock in Prague, Czech Republic.

Stand under the old town hall a few minutes before the hour; the clock performs its short sequence then.

Afternoon · 45 min
Vyšehrad

Vyšehrad

Historic fort in Prague.

The ramparts above the river are the quiet reward of this day; walk them as the evening settles.

Evening · 1 hr 30 min

Charles Bridge and the Clementinum sit close enough to fold into one morning on foot. Save the last hours for Vyšehrad, where the ramparts face the river and the evening.

Day 3

The old town's inner quarters

Old New Synagogue

Old New Synagogue

Synagogue in Prague, Czechia.

It is a working synagogue, so plan for a covered head and an unhurried entrance; the interior is small enough to take in properly in its 45 minutes.

Morning · 45 min
Spanish Synagogue

Spanish Synagogue

Synagogue in Prague.

The newer of the two morning stops, with more light; it makes a calm closer to the quarter's walk.

Morning · 45 min
Church of Our Lady before Týn

Church of Our Lady before Týn

Church building in Old Town, Czech Republic.

Afternoon · 45 min
National Gallery Prague

National Gallery Prague

Art museum in Prague, Czechia.

Evening · 2 hr

Keep the morning to the two synagogues and the Church of Our Lady before Týn; they sit in a short, quiet loop. Give the National Gallery the full two hours.

Day 4

New Town on foot, then a last tower

Wenceslas Square

Wenceslas Square

City square in Prague.

Morning · 45 min
National Museum in Prague

National Museum in Prague

Czech museum institution.

It sits at the upper end of Wenceslas Square, so start there and keep the morning to one continuous walk.

Morning · 2 hr
Powder Tower

Powder Tower

Tower in Prague, Czech Republic.

Afternoon · 2 hr
Žižkov Television Tower

Žižkov Television Tower

TV tower in Prague, Czech Republic.

The viewing deck is the point; time the climb for the last of the daylight over the rooftops.

Evening · 45 min

Wenceslas Square runs straight into the National Museum, so the morning is one easy stretch. Keep the Žižkov Television Tower for the last of the May light.

Good to know

Is Prague easy to see in four days on foot?

Mostly: day one climbs the castle hill and walks down, day two follows the river, day three stays in the old town. Vyšehrad and the Žižkov tower are the two stretches that ask for planning, and both come at the end of their days.

When should you cross Charles Bridge to avoid crowds?

First thing in the morning. This trip puts it at the top of day two, when the span is still quiet, with the Clementinum a short walk on from the far side.

What should we bring for a packed Prague trip?

Shoes that handle cobbles and two hills, a refillable bottle for the climb to Strahov and the castle, and a pen for the Lennon Wall.

How do the Jewish quarter stops fit together?

The Old New and Spanish synagogues sit a short walk apart on day three's morning, with the Church of Our Lady before Týn nearby to round out the loop before the National Gallery in the evening.
