Istanbul in 3 Days: Mosques, Palaces and the Bosphorus

April · three days · Ottoman courtyards and Byzantine mosaics · Galata to the Bosphorus

  • 3 days
  • April
  • 12 stops
  • A couple's trip

This route keeps the old city to itself for two days, then crosses the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus to see it from the far side. Each day moves between places of faith and places of power, so no two mornings feel the same. In April the light is soft and the crowds are thin, which suits a couple who would rather walk between landmarks than hurry past them.

A sample trip planned by Triptic.

Map of the stops in Istanbul
Day 1

A day of domes and minarets

Chora Church

Chora Church

Church converted to mosque in Turkey.

The Byzantine mosaics and frescoes are the reason to come. It now functions as a mosque, so a morning visit keeps you ahead of the day's crowds and gives the interiors their best light.

Morning · 2 hr
Şehzade Mosque

Şehzade Mosque

Mosque in İstanbul, Turkey.

Morning · 45 min
Süleymaniye Mosque

Süleymaniye Mosque

Mosque in İstanbul, Turkey.

Its wide courtyard is one of the best free viewpoints over the Golden Horn. Linger there rather than hurrying through to the prayer hall.

Afternoon · 45 min
New Mosque

New Mosque

Mosque in İstanbul, Turkey.

Evening · 45 min

Start at Chora Church before the city is up, and let Süleymaniye's courtyard be the long pause halfway through.

Day 2

The sultan's city

Grand Bazaar

Grand Bazaar

Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey.

An hour and a half disappears quickly among the lanes. Go early while it is calm, and let the covered streets carry you toward the palace end of the old city.

Morning · 1 hr 30 min
Sublime Porte

Sublime Porte

Synecdoche for the central government of the Ottoman Empire.

It is a gate rather than a building, the historic doorway of the Ottoman government. A short look from the street is enough before the walk up to Topkapı.

Morning · 45 min
Topkapı Palace

Topkapı Palace

Palace museum in Istanbul, Turkey.

Afternoon · 2 hr
Sultan Ahmed Mosque

Sultan Ahmed Mosque

Historic mosque located in Istanbul, Turkey, also known as Blue Mosque.

Evening is the calmest moment here, after most visitors have moved on. Dress for a place of worship and give the blues and the domes time.

Evening · 45 min

Begin at the Grand Bazaar before it fills, then follow the road from the Sublime Porte to the gates of Topkapı.

Day 3

Across the water

Galata Tower

Galata Tower

Historical tower in İstanbul.

The viewing platform is small, so the first hour of the morning gives you the clearest panorama and the shortest wait on the way up.

Morning · 2 hr
Taksim Square

Taksim Square

Square in Istanbul, Turkey.

Morning · 45 min
Dolmabahçe Palace

Dolmabahçe Palace

Palace in Istanbul, Turkey.

The state rooms reward a slow pace rather than a quick pass. Leave part of the visit for a stroll along the waterside in front of the palace.

Afternoon · 1 hr 30 min
Maiden's Tower

Maiden's Tower

Lighthouse at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus in Turkey.

A short boat ride carries you to the lighthouse islet. The evening slot is the point of it, when the Bosphorus turns colour and both shores appear at once.

Evening · 45 min

Take the morning across the Golden Horn to Galata Tower, and save the last light for Maiden's Tower on the Bosphorus.

Good to know

Is Chora Church a mosque?

Yes, it reopened for worship under its Turkish name, Kariye. The Byzantine mosaics and frescoes remain the reason to visit, so go in the morning and leave time to look up.

How much time do you need at Topkapı Palace?

This trip sets aside two hours, which is enough for the imperial courtyards, the harem and the treasury if you keep a steady pace and let the quieter rooms breathe.

Where is the best free view over the Bosphorus?

Süleymaniye Mosque's courtyard on day one and the Galata Tower platform on day three give two very different angles over the Golden Horn and the strait.

Can you walk from the Grand Bazaar to Topkapı Palace?

Yes. The Sublime Porte gate sits on the road between them, so the two are joined naturally in one morning, ending at the palace gates in the old city.
